First review of 2020 is a movie from 2019. So a little late, but oh well . Caught right before it gets pulled from theaters.
Rian Johnson, I don’t hate him for what he did to the Last Jedi. I don’t agree with his choices, but I’m aware that that’s not his only film. I will say this film, even with it’s flaws, was still enjoyable and worth the watch.
For those who enjoy mystery “whodoneit” type of films will love this. I can’t talk about MANY details due to anything I say regarding details, even vaguely put, could result in spoilers. So I’ll just talk about what I like ascetically and a few nitpicks and I’ll leave it at that. For those who want to talk spoilers, feel free to DM.
The cinematography on this film with really good. Some very creative angle choices and decisions I can get behind. Some very interesting lighting choices were made that probably would come off as a cheesy if this was another type of film. There are some continuity issues, editing errors and camera stuff that usually filmmakers would notice and hard to not see, takes you out of the film temporary but you don’t stay out.
The cast also did an awesome job. Some of the dialogue in the beginning felt off, but it improves as the film goes on. It’s a real shame, some of the actors felt under utilized because this cast is massive. So I wouldn’t mind seeing a longer cut. The only complaint I have against an actor is Toni Colette (Hear me out). I think she was playing into her character a little TOO hard (this may be an unpopular opinion, so feel free to disagree). Besides her I liked every bodies performance.
Otherwise this was very interesting and somewhat original story, that was dark and funny. Just pay attention to detail!
Heres to more films in 2020
Happy New Year.
